Introduction

• Mapping has always adapted to technology; some good, some bad
• We still think of maps with priority on graphic appearance rather than content in information quality
• Today's mapping systems need to provide knowledge to users, as well as data / information
• There exists a need to explore multimedia extensions for 'real world' apps. Hardware/software are much resolved, we need systems

GIS Metaphors

• Metaphor set:
  Storyteller: 'tells' the user about the geographic region (e-magazine)
  Navigator: Finding information (map control)
  Guide: helps user better understand and appreciate the information presented (ie Lonely Planet)
  Sage: support, expert advice for decision-making (authoratative resource)
  Data Store: gateway linkages to information (data depot)
  Fact Book: repository type information (CNN)
  Gameplayer: map-creation gaming, wizard-like to teach the basics of geography and mapping; allows for customization (eg. puzzles, action, entertainment - Sim City)
  Theatre: stage, design, agents
• Toolbox: using tools for access and discovery (real-time links, cams)

• Future research needed for better use of geoonline products
• Knowledge if twofold: knowing it and knowing where to get it
• There needs to be products to provide the means of acquiring knowledge and not just volumes of information

• Application is dated in today's view
• How spatial is the application? Not just text, but interactive, dynamic mapping needed
• Use of plug-ins harmful; users turned off; especially those who dial-up
• Should take a look at Web standards, ie Java applets which are standard for all browsers
• Needs distributed spatial concept
