GEOHome: Outline and Schedule

DATE: 25 January 2000

PROJECT NO: 360-1

TITLE: GEOHome

ACTIVITY: Data Applications

SUB ACTIVITY: Spatial Data Applications Development

APPLICATION: GIS Customization / Web Mapping

OBJECTIVES / OUTPUTS:

To develop and create a GIS user-interface of houses in the real estate market generated from Ottawa house property and street network data, for client use.

To develop metadata standards for easy access and selection of homes based on user-defined / entered criteria, using XML and the FDGC Content Standard 2.0.

To demonstrate the capability of GIS and programming tools when applied to housing information / data.

To investigate and exploit the further potential uses of GeoHome in operational environments, ease of use, portability, and data access / integration.

To investigate further use for web-based data access with ActiveX integrated development environments.

SUMMARY OF BENEFITS / IMPACT:

A GIS-based system will be developed to provide the end-user with up-to-date real estate housing information. Automation, interfacing, and conversion tools will aid in the development of effective data access methods of housing / real estate data. O ther data sources (GIS/GPS) will be used for backdrop and orientation.

The FDGC 2.0 metadata standard will be implemented on housing data to maintain a common framework and aid data cataloguing / access.

The resulting system will be investigated to enhance capability between GIS programming tools and ActiveX IDE’s for web-based access. Compatibility will be maintained with standards and technology developments while meeting the on-going requirements of industry.

TECHNICAL RISK:

Data obtained may contain invalid geo-position information. Fallbacks are available from other derived data sources.

Acquisition of up to date, accurate housing information may be difficult to find, due to privacy / copyright issues (e.g. Exact address of home). Fallbacks are available by assigning sample values which best represent and illustrate the GEOHome tool a nd its functionality.

There may always be hardware/software component failures, which may affect the performance and efficiency of the system. Fallbacks are available by obtaining new hardware components/restoring files from backups.
